Avaes is recipient of the Amnesty International Media Award for his poem “Bhopal” and has recently founded the Lahore Agitprop Theatre Company in Pakistan.
Works written for theatre include touring productions “In God We Trust:, “Shadow Companion”, “Crystal-Kissed” and currently “Fields of Grey”. For radio, “Bora Bistrah” BBC Radio 3 and for short film “Take It Slow” (Contact Theatre/BBC co-production).
Balbir Singh initially graduated from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Leeds. He went onto study the classical North Indian dance style with world-leading Kathak exponent, Padmashri Guru Pratap Pawar, as one of his chief disciples.
Balbir is Artistic Director of Balbir Singh Dance Company and creates a synthesis of work bringing together Kathak and contemporary dance with live music.
His work is performed nationally. Recently he presented a large scale, high profile Cultural Olympiad Project, "Synchronised". The company is working with the Royal Opera House as part of its new Link Programme.
Halima Cassell is based in Blackburn, but is nationally renowned for her sculpted ceramic work. which has been exhibited in many notable institutions.
Halima was born in Pakistan and brought up in Manchester, and this varied multi-cultural background is tangibly present in her work. She fuses her Asian roots with a fascination for African pattern work and architectural geometry.
Halima has her work on show in many galleries around the UK which this year have included The Saatchi Gallery, Blackwell Arts & Crafts House, RBS Duo Show and locally in Blackburn Museum.
Jahedra Choudhury-Potter works in rhythm rhyme and beat. Based in Manchester, she fuses sounds from different genres of music such as reggae, funk and rock to create a dynamic variety of different flavours and tastes. She navigates her audience through experiences of perception, local, national and international identities, gender and sexuality, poverty, caste and class.
Jaheda has performed round the UK and also in various melas in Manchester, Blackburn and Rossendale.
